Birchbox UK – February 2018

Birchbox UK February 2018 unboxing

Where are we in the year?  February is the time of the year when L O V E (Valentine’s or Galentine’s) and pancakes start getting our attention. But Birchbox UK February 2018 wants to point us towards beauty in decades past.

From 70’s bronzing, 80’s neon colours and 90’s glitter – there’s plenty of beauty looks to look back on and inspire us.  (Or to avoid at all cost.)  After all, some beauty looks really have stood test of time.  Find out which of those might be included in this month’s box!

Birchbox UK February 2018 unboxing

True beauty is timeless is the theme behind the three different box designs this month, representing three different decades that we were given the choice between.

Usually I’d class myself as a 70s girl (based on my music taste and style preference).  Surprisingly though I felt more drawn to the 80s box by its design, so that’s the box I chose.  But it’s okay, the 80s still has David Bowie.  (Plus Modern Love, my favourite David Bowie song, was born in the 80s after all… Oh and I was born in the 80s too, come to think of it.)

Samples

With a theme that looks back on beauty through the ages, will this be reflected in the sample selection for Birchbox UK February 2018?  There’s only one way to find out:

  • The Beauty Crop Eyeshadow Trio (FULL SIZE!)
I’m not surprised to see an eyeshadow trio to represent beauty of this decade, but it’s a shocker that there isn’t a neon purple or pink shade!  (Proper 80s eyeshadow shades!)  Thankfully Birchbox have brought more wearable colours from past decades for us to wear in the modern day.  Although I do see a hint of purple in the darkest colour of this set!  (It wouldn’t be 80s without some purple…)
  • Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm (FULL-SIZE!)
I knew a bright fuchsia pink would be somewhere in this box…  I’m just relieved it’s in a lip colour!  Regardless of colour, being a lip balm too makes it particularly useful for me at this time of year.  (80s themed or not!)
  • Percy & Reed Finishing Polish
Hair.  Another big 80’s look and it was all about the BIG hair.  Again another surprise from this box was that the hair product wasn’t either a hairspray or mouse!  But to be honest, I’d have preferred a finishing polish anyway.  Luckily I curled my hair before filming my unboxing, which perfectly shows how this little number can add a final sheen to a styled look!

Birchbox UK February 2018

  • Luseta Coconut Milk Hair Mask
I’m pretty sure hair masks weren’t a thing of the 80s, but by now I’ve realised a lot of these products were in the other decade’s boxes, so these samples aren’t specific to the decades.  Well, the majority of them aren’t anyway.  Besides, it’s always nice to try a spendy hair mask…
  • Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream
Balance Me have been impressing me recently with their products.  Although it’s a brand we see regularly in Birchbox that’s not to say I don’t enjoy their products.  Since receiving this eye cream I’ve been applying it day and night and my tired winter eyes already feel and look ‘smoothed’.  Maybe I do need some eye cream in my beauty regime…

Box round up

Hold the phone – do you remember in last month’s box round up I spoke about the full-size Keeome silicone buff makeup applicator as the February sneak peak?  Well looks like that never materialised…  (Anyone know why?)

I’d class this box as satisfactory, although I should give it more merit as I did receive 2 full-size items totalling over the price I paid for the box.  I am quite looking forward to next month’s box though, namely because the March sneak peak shows that we’ll be receiving a charcoal face mask, which looks like the kind that will be an absolute pleasure to peel off! (And I wonder if that full-size Keeome applicator will show up too…)

Birchbox UK January 2018

Birchbox UK January 2018 unboxing

It’s a new year already and Christmas celebrations (with all the feasts and parties) passed long ago.  Diets have begun, gym memberships are back to being active and even my Birchbox UK January 2018 is on a New Year kick.  It’s time to focus on the year ahead.

Most people are done with getting all glammed up this month, unlike last month when we received a number of sparkling treasures from Birchbox. But that’s not to say we can’t make time to pamper ourselves.  Find out what I received below!

Birchbox UK January 2018 unboxing

Birchbox UK January 2018 kick starts the new year with the theme Stand Tall.  (Figuratively speaking of course, as I’m only 5ft 2.)  And as it’s the time of year to get organised, Birchbox UK have teamed up with British stationary brand Ohh Deer.  Namely because stationary = getting organised!

As for resolutions, instead of the usual babble like ‘get fitter’ and ‘quit this or that’, Birchbox urge us to ‘rip up the resolution rulebook’ and embrace something we really enjoy.  If that means making a habit of trialling new beauty products then count me in!

Samples

This is what we’re all here for; the samples.  Birchbox subscribers knew they’d be receiving a full size Lord & Berry Blusher Crayon since being given the choice of two colours.  So let’s get down to the details!

Birchbox UK January 2018 samples

  • Lord & Berry Blusher Crayon (FULL SIZE!)
I’ve owned blusher sticks before, but blusher crayons?  Trying it straight out of the box it’s surprisingly creamy and quite blendable too.  There’s no going overboard with it either, I drew a few lines on my cheeks (something I never thought I’d say) and used my fingers to blend, which left me with a natural-looking flush that was quite easy to master.
  • Marcelle Waterproof Eyeliner in Charcoal
Here’s another product that’s soft and smooth to apply.  Grey is a welcoming twist on the classic black for me, being so pale le noir can look too harsh at times.  I don’t often wear pencil eyeliner on my upper lid out of frustration from making a mess.  However, this glided on and, more importantly, stayed on.
  • Thermaliv Night Cream
I usually reach for oil (over a cream) for my night time regime.  But this could be a game changer.  The collagen production boosting and vitamin E ingredients are what drew me in and oh my word, it’s a pleasure to apply.  Waking up the day after my skin felt blissfully smooth and I couldn’t wait to apply it again the same evening.
  • Paul & Joe Beauty Primer in Dagree
So, after some leaflet confusion I discovered what this product is and its intrigued me even more.  A hydrating beauty primer (I’m listening) with 3 types of hyaluronic acid (yes, my skin loves that stuff!) that absorb into the skin at different times during the day to keep my complexion hydrated and boosted at all times (okay – sold!).  On first impressions, it definitely does what it says on the tin (bottle) and packs a dewy glow to boot.
  • Afterspa Amazing Makeup Remover
Amazingly – get it – this works!  Admittedly, I was dubious at first whether a cloth and just water could break down and remove ALL of my make up.  (Including foundation.)  Even my usual makeup remover still leaves me with panda eyes in the morning.  But I was proved utterly wrong when I woke up without looking an inch like Robert Smith.  (Joy!)  This will come in handy when I stumble in after a night-out and can’t be bother to cleanse, tone, zzzz….

Added Little Extras

When I hear the tune of a Birchbox collaboration, I always look forward to the added little extras and there’s been a few this month.  Of course we, as Birchbox subscribers, have come to expect a little discount with the brand collaborator – 20% off at Ohh Dear can tick that off nicely.

On top of that however, for a discounted fee we were also sent the flamingo adorned weekly planner as well as some stickers that are both fabulous.

Birchbox UK January 2018 added extras

The added LOC Shadow sticks were a thank you for recommending a friend who signed up.  Another bonus if you managed to recruit more Birchbox subscribers!

Box round up

Well I think it’s fair to say I’m quite chuffed with this box.  Having tried all of the items already I don’t think there’s one weak link in here.  Birchbox UK January 2017 – you have started the year on a happy note!

The fun hasn’t ended here either (spoiler alert for next month coming up).  Another full-size product will be waiting for us in February’s box in the form of a Keeome (remember them?) Silicone Buff makeup applicator.  Give me some of that South Korean beauty good stuff!

Birchbox UK – December 2017

Birchbox_UK_December_2017_unboxing

It’s taken me to receive my Birchbox UK December 2017 box to realise it’s actually December now.  December hasn’t creeped up on me; it’s made an unexpected, out-of-nowhere pounce attack!  How does a year fly by so quickly?

You might remember last year (in my Birchbox UK December 2016) that I launched my first ever Birchbox giveaway.  Well this year I’m doing the same, but stepping up my game a little bit…

Birchbox UK December 2017 unboxing

To end the year, Birchbox UK have declared this month’s theme Life’s Little Treasures.  Which links up quite nicely with the beauty products that are typically released this time of year.  With the majority of these giving an iridescent sheen or at least a hint of sparkle, they too can look like little treasures too!

Interestingly, Birchbox have collaborated on the box design with Matthew Williamson.  A luxury designer I wasn’t aware of, but after a quick google I was soon to become an admirer of his gorgeous prints… like the one on this month’s box.

Birchbox UK December 2017

Birchbox subscribers had a pick from two full size lip products this month and I couldn’t decide which one to settle for.  (So I left it to Birchbox to decide for me…)

One was a rather feisty and festive red from Birchbox created brand LOC (Love of Colour).  Whereas the the other was a moisturising lip balm with a natural red tint.  Here’s which Birchbox decided I should receive, along with the other samples:

  • Baïja Paris Carmelised Honey Body Scrub
Now this is what I’m talking about when I mentioned festive beauty products!  Think of a Christmas themed exfoliator and this would be it.  I half expected it to smell of clementines.

Baija Paris Caramelised Honey Body Scrub

  • LOC Vibrant Matte Lipstick in Color Me Confident Cranberry (FULL SIZE!)
After leaving it to Birchbox to decide for me, I’m pretty glad they’ve given me the full-on red lipstick.  Despite being matte, LOC lipsticks still seem to be quite creamy and not lacking in colour.
  • Sand & Sky Brilliant Skin Purifying Clay Mask
Apparently a cult product – which rock must I have been living under to miss this one?  At £39.90, this feels like a sprinkle of luxury in my box.
  • Spectrum Collections B04 Angled Blender Brush (FULL SIZE!)
Another Spectrum brush to add to the collection!  The last Spectrum eye brush I received from Birchbox actually trumped one of my Real Techniques brush, so I’m happy to see this in my box.
  • ModelCo Contour Stick
I’ve not read other Birchbox UK December 2017 reviews yet, but I think it’s a nice touch we received the other item from our choice of two Modelco products back in October’s box.  Especially as this was another decision I had left to Birchbox, because I couldn’t decide myself.
  • Cargo Blush in Sunset Beach?
Can anyone solve this mystery for me?  This item isn’t printed on my leaflet, so I’m not sure if this is a mistake or a pleasant surprise.  It’s quite a lovely blush though that could easily double up as a highlighter.

Box round up

Once again, Birchbox have delivered in sending out a festive mix of samples just in time for the holidays.  With two full size items with a total that scrapes just below the price I’ve paid for the box, they’ve finished the year on a happy note.

Already looking ahead, Birchbox UK have already revealed a teaser for next year.  (I know, already!  I don’t even know what my New Year’s Eve plans are yet…)  A choice of two blushes (interestingly in stick form) will be in our January boxes from familiar brand Lord & Berry.

Birchbox UK – November 2017

Birchbox UK November 2017

Birchbox UK November 2017 is a big one – with a BIG collaborator -namely Vogue, having found out last month as a teaser on the back of the sample booklet.  (Oh, and my Birchbox is ON time this month.)

I doubt there’s ever been as big collaborator as Vogue and considering the iconic magazine works with hundreds of big brands, this surely means we’ll get some big names in our box too, right?

Birchbox UK November 2017 Unboxing

The theme this month is… THERE IS NO THEME!  I had to read the leaflet twice to check this, but yep, there is no theme mentioned.  But who needs a theme when you’re collaborating with Vogue? (Honestly, I can’t get over how big this is.)

Vogue celebrated its centenary last year and created their edit of 100 greatest beauty products of all time – and some of these items will appear in our box too!  *claps hands excitedly*  How exciting!  So, let’s get to the good stuff…

Samples

Birchbox UK November 2017

We had the choice of two box designs this month – I chose the one above, obviously, just because it looks more ‘Vogue’ to me, darling.  There were no teasers of which products may surprise us inside from last month’s box, which built anticipation!  (For me, anyway.)  Here’s what I got:

Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk
Percy & Reed Smooth, Sealed & Sensational Volumising No Oil Oil
L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream
Benefit Hoola Bronzer
Birchbox Brush Cleaner (FULL SIZE!)

Wow, okay, where to begin?  I hadn’t heard of Klorane before, but from only trying the dry shampoo, quickly and whilst filming my unboxing, I’m already considering buying it full size.  Many dry shampoos can leave my scalp feeling a bit itchy, but this really felt like it was gentle to my skin whilst soaking up unwanted grease too.  (Sorry if that’s TMI.)

I was very happy to see the L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream as it is tipped to be one of the best in the industry.  I’m receiving this at a perfect time of year too, my hands are at their driest when the temperature drops, so it’s brilliant I’ll now be equipped with this.

Whilst Benefit is a brand that isn’t a stranger to Birchbox subscribers, it’s still a pretty big deal to receive the praised cult Hoola Bronzer.  (Even if it is sample size.)

Added Little Extras…

Birchbox UK November 2017

With all big collaborations, Birchbox are good to us and usually slip us another little offer.  This month, Birchbox subscribers have been given 6 complimentary issues of Vogue magazine, when buying a one-year or two-year subscription.

Box Round Up

Well wasn’t this a very exciting box?  And there was even the comeback of a Birchbox lifestyle item too!  Although I didn’t receive it in my Birchbox UK November 2017, I was quite impressed to see other subscribers getting a Clarins hand cream too.  (I love Clarins, you lucky devils.)

December is always a strong box and the only teaser Birchbox have given us so far is on the back of this month’s leaflet.  In the next few weeks we’ll have to make choice out of a festive lipstick; a classic party red, or a nicely natural tint?  Decisions, decisions…

Birchbox UK – October 2017

Birchbox UK October 2017 unboxing

I know, I know… this Birchbox UK October 2017 unboxing is embarrassingly late.  But, it isn’t actually my fault.  In fact I dutifully waited for my Birchbox to arrive at the start of this month (I’d set aside time to film my unboxing too!), but it didn’t.  (Cue the violin…)

After 5 working days had passed (to allow for delivery), I contacted the Customer Support team at Birchbox.  I received a reply within a day to say there’d been a ‘warehouse issue’, I assume with the delivery company (?), but was assured this wouldn’t happen again.

Eventually, I received my Birchbox roughly two weeks late, so despite being annoyed I didn’t want to skip writing and filming my unboxing (especially as it wasn’t my fault!  Ahem…).  So, my apologies, but here it is – a shamefully late Birchbox unboxing for October 2017!

Birchbox UK October 2017 unboxing

We all know October is a month to ‘think pink’ and raise awareness for breast cancer.  Birchbox UK have collaborated with ‘CoppaFeel!’ for this month’s Feeling Good theme, which is a charity fighting to prevent the late detection of breast cancer.  (Okay, so you were disastrously late Birchbox, but I nod my head in approval at this.)

Inspired by the theme, a shower sticker was also included in this month’s box that shows how to look for signs of breast cancer.  Although we didn’t have a choice of box designs, we did get a pick of a ModelCo product.

Birchbox UK October 2017 CoppaFeel

Samples

You’ve probably all seen the selection of samples that subscribers have been receiving by now, but here’s my Birchbox UK October 2017 pick to keep me ‘Feeling Good‘:

Anatomicals Grab Your Melons Shower Gel (FULL SIZE!)
ModelCo Megalash Mascara
Balance Me Pure Skin Face Wash
Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner
Grounded Body Scrub

So sadly the ModelCo item, where Birchbox subscribers had the lovely choice from either a mascara or a contour stick, wasn’t full size, but wasn’t exactly stingy either.  Top tip from me here; when trying to decide which sample to opt for, I researched which was the most expensive out of the two, to get my money’s worth.  (It was the mascara, by £3 full size price!)  Although, I only done this because neither jumped out in front of me at first.

Birchbox UK October 2017 samples

The Anatomicals shower gel was a nice link to the theme and was this month’s only full size item (that was cheap and cheerful at £1.50!).  I’ve actually used most of this now and despite its low value, the fruity melon scent has not been compromised!

Eyeko and Balance Me are familiar brands to receive in my Birchbox, but I’m happy to see them nonetheless.  Eyeko’s Skinny Eyeliner is particularly well suited to me, as I never leave the house without using a skinny eyeliner first.

Box Round Up

Receiving the box late was a bit of a peeve, although I did receive a mascara and eyeliner sample – two products I definitely use the most everyday!  I wouldn’t say this box is as strong as last month’s.  Although, raising awareness for breast cancer detection as a theme, and a campaign, is something I can’t argue with.

Next month promises to be the bomb, if only because Birchbox are collaborating with Vogue magazine!  Big, BIG news people.  To celebrate the Vogue 100 Beauty Hall of Fame,  which is 100 products chosen by Vogue beauty editors past and present, we’ll be receiving a handpicked edit of these!  I’m keeping a look out for the white delivery van already…
